  • Ayat al-Nur describes

A description of virtues of various righteous acts

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "(1) Purification is a part of faith; (2) al-ḥamdu lillāh (all praise and gratitude is for Allah alone) fills the scale, (3) subḥān Allāh (Perfection is to Allah alone) and al-ḥamdu lillāh fill up what is between the heavens and the earth; (4) prayer is a light; (5) charity is proof ˹of one's faith˺; (6) patience is brightness; and (7) the Quran is evidence either for you or against you. All men go out early in the morning and sell themselves, thereby either earning salvation or earning destruction."

Obligation of Salah

Seriousness of the importance of Prayer

The presentment of humanity

  • Gathering of all on a single plain
  • Will be grave and severely distressful time
  • Believers and hypocrites will be among the people

69:16 And the heaven will split ˹open˺, for that Day it is infirm. 17 And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight ˹of them˺. 18 That Day, you will be exhibited ˹for judgement˺; not hidden among you is anything concealed.

Sajdah on the Judgement Day

  • Everyone will be ordered to make sajdah to all

  • Sincere believers who used to prostrate will fall in sajdah

68:42 The Day the shin will be uncovered and they will be invited to prostration but they will not be able, 43 Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound. 44 So leave Me, ˹O Muhammad˺, with ˹the matter of˺ whoever denies the Qur'an. We will progressively lead them ˹to punishment˺ from where they do not know. 45 And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.

  • The Sirat will then be placed over Hellfire
  • The prophets/angels saying: !

Commandment for prayer

Ordered to only show obedience to Allah

51:55 And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers. 56 And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. 57 I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.

Ordered to worship: Salah and Zakah

Salah is a private conversation

Hadith: Salah is a private conversation

That the Prophet ﷺ did iʿtikāf (performed spiritual retreat) and gave a sermon to the people, saying: "Verily, when one of you stands in prayer, he is privately conversing with his Lord, so let each one of you know what he is privately conversing with his Lord, and let no one of you make his recitation in prayer loud to one another."

Hadith: Conversation in Surat al-Fatihah

the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declare that Allah the Exalted had said: I have divided the prayer into two halves between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks. When the servant says: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe, Allah the Most High says: My servant has praised Me. And when he (the servant) says: The Most Compassionate, the Merciful, Allah the Most High says: My servant has lauded Me. And when he (the servant) says: Master of the Day of judgment, He remarks: My servant has glorified Me. and sometimes He would say: My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me. And when he (the worshipper) says: Thee do we worship and of Thee do we ask help, He (Allah) says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Then, when he (the worshipper) says: Guide us to the straight path, the path of those to whom Thou hast been Gracious not of those who have incurred Thy displeasure, nor of those who have gone astray, He (Allah) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Sufyan said: 'Ala b. 'Abd al-Rahman b. Ya'qub narrated it to me when I went to him and he was confined to his home on account of illness, and I asked him about it.

Certainly Allah responds to His servants in Salah

2:186 And when My servants ask you, ˹O Muhammad˺, concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me ˹by obedience˺ and believe in Me that they may be ˹rightly˺ guided.

Done by those who are given knowledge and are moved by the Quran

19:58 Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried ˹in the ship˺ with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those whom We guided and chose. Showing humility is a matter of honor in the sight of Allah

22:18 Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates - for him there is no bestower of honor. Indeed, Allah does what He wills.

Done to show submission to the commandment

25:60 And when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Merciful," they say, "And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?" And it increases them in aversion.

Done because Allah is our Master and He knows all hidden secrets

38:24 ˹David˺ said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe ˹in addition˺ to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing ˹in prostration˺ and turned in repentance ˹to Allah˺.

Done by those who humble themselves

53:59 Then at this statement do you wonder? 60 And you laugh and do not weep 61 While you are proudly sporting? 62 So prostrate to Allah and worship ˹Him˺.

Done by those who are moved by the Quran

16:49 And to Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels ˹as well˺, and they are not arrogant. 50 They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.

They believe in the Quran

They have a high level of intelligence

4:162 But those firm in knowledge among them and the believers believe in what has been revealed to you, ˹O Muhammad˺, and what was revealed before you. And the establishers of prayer ˹especially˺ and the givers of zakah and the believers in Allah and the Last Day - those We will give a great reward.

They're moved by receiving the Nur

They are not deaf and blind to the Quran

25:73 And those who, when reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall upon them deaf and blind. 74 And those who say, "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous." 75 Those will be awarded the Chamber for what they patiently endured, and they will be received therein with greetings and ˹words of˺ peace.

They humble their hearts after knowing that Quran is the Truth

22:54 And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and ˹therefore˺ believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.

They fall in sujud after hearing the Quran

17:106 And ˹it is˺ a Qur'an which We have separated ˹by intervals˺ that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively. 107 Say, "Believe in it or do not believe. Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it - when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration, 108 And they say, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled." 109 And they fall upon their faces weeping, and the Qur'an increases them in humble submission.

Prayer is a sign of Iman

32:15 Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt ˹Allah˺ with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.

This is why it distinguishes one from a disbelief

It is narrated on the authority of Jabir that he heard the Apostle (may peace and blessings be upon him) saying. Verily between man and between polytheism and unbelief is the negligence of prayer.

Their practices of Salah

They are truly guided and they establish prayer

2:1 Alif, Lam, Mim. 2 This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah - 3 Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them, 4 And who believe in what has been revealed to you, ˹O Muhammad˺, and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain ˹in faith˺. 5 Those are upon ˹right˺ guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.

Their hearts are humbled

8:2 The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely - 3 The ones who establish prayer, and from what We have provided them, they spend. 4 Those are the believers, truly. For them are degrees ˹of high position˺ with their Lord and forgiveness and noble provision.

They fear Allah for who he is

[[al‑Hasan b. Ali]] used to tremble and his face would turn yellow whenever he began wudu. When he was asked, ‘What happens to you?’ he replied:
"It is only right that the one who is about to stand before the Lord of the Throne should turn pale and have his joints shake."

They hasten to do good deeds

23:57 Indeed, they who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord 58 And they who believe in the signs of their Lord 59 And they who do not associate anything with their Lord 60 And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord - 61 It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip ˹others˺ therein.

They want to come close to Allah

96:18 We will call the angels of Hell. 19 No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near ˹to Allah˺.

Hadith: They fall in sujud to come close to Allah

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The nearest a servant comes to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself, so make supplication (in this state).

They can't sleep at night

32:15 Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt ˹Allah˺ with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant. 16 They arise from ˹their˺ beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend. 17 And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do. 18 Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.

They spend their night in prayer

25:63 And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them ˹harshly˺, they say ˹words of˺ peace, 64 And those who spend ˹part of˺ the night to their Lord prostrating and standing ˹in prayer˺ 65 And those who say, "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering; 66 Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence."

They seek benefit from reminders

51:55 And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.

They seeking to purify themselves

29:45 Recite, ˹O Muhammad˺, what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.

They are not heedless

7:205 And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.

They are not anxious and constantly praying

70:19 Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 20 When evil touches him, impatient, 21 And when good touches him, withholding ˹of it˺, 22 Except the observers of prayer - 23 Those who are constant in their prayer 24 And those within whose wealth is a known right 25 For the petitioner and the deprived - 26 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 27 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 28 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -

They spend their times in masajid

24:36 ˹Such niches are˺ in mosques which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings 37 ˹Are˺ men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah and performance of prayer and giving of zakah. They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will ˹fearfully˺ turn about -

They pray in congregations

2:43 And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow ˹in worship and obedience˺.

Hadith: Reward for congregational prayer

Prayer said in a congregation is twenty-seven degrees more excellent than prayer said by a single person.

They protect their prayer

23:9 And they who carefully maintain their prayers -

2:238 Maintain with care the ˹obligatory˺ prayers and ˹in particular˺ the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient.

They pray on its due time

4:103 And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or ˹lying˺ on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish ˹regular˺ prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.

Hadith: Praying on time is one of the most virtuous actions

The best of' the deeds or deed is the (observance of) prayer at its proper time and kindness to the parents.

They encourage their family to pray

20:131 And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to ˹some˺ categories of them, ˹its being but˺ the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring. 132 And enjoin prayer upon your family ˹and people˺ and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the ˹best˺ outcome is for ˹those of˺ righteousness.

The muhsinun spent their nights in prayer

51:16 Accepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good. 17 They used to sleep but little of the night, 18 And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness, 19 And from their properties was ˹given˺ the right of the ˹needy˺ petitioner and the deprived.

They constantly remember Allah

3:190 Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. 191 Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or ˹lying˺ on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, ˹saying˺, "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You ˹above such a thing˺; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire. 192 Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire - You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers. 193 Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, ˹saying˺, 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die with the righteous. 194 Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in ˹Your˺ promise." 195 And their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be lost the work of ˹any˺ worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another…

Them in the Barzakh

Seeming like time for Maghrib: Let me pray!

The Musallin on Judgement Day

It's difficult only for those who lack humility

2:45 And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive ˹to Allah˺ 46 Who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.

Rewards for those who pray

They will be successful

23:1 Certainly will the believers have succeeded: 2 They who are during their prayer humbly submissive

They will receive the good news

22:34 And for all religion We have appointed a rite ˹of sacrifice˺ that they may mention the name of Allah over what He has provided for them of ˹sacrificial˺ animals. For your god is one God, so to Him submit. And, ˹O Muhammad˺, give good tidings to the humble ˹before their Lord˺ 35 Who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts are fearful, and ˹to˺ the patient over what has afflicted them, and the establishers of prayer and those who spend from what We have provided them.

Their sins are forgiven

11:114 And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember. 115 And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good. 116 So why were there not among the generations before you those of enduring discrimination forbidding corruption on earth - except a few of those We saved from among them? But those who wronged pursued what luxury they were given therein, and they were criminals.

Tawbah: Conversion of bad deeds into good deeds

25:70 Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

Hadith: They seek to wipe away sins

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Five prayers and from one Friday prayer to (the next) Friday prayer is an expiation (of the sins committed in between their intervals) if major sins are not committed.

Hadith: They seek to cleanse themselves from filth

The similitude of five prayers is like an overflowing river passing by the gate of one of you in which he washes five times daily, Hasan said: No filthiness can remain on him.

Hadith: They try to reap the rewards for Fajr and Isha

The Prophet ﷺ said, "No prayer is heavier upon the hypocrites than the Fajr and the ʿIsha' prayers and if they knew what is in them (in reward), they would have attended them, even if (it was) crawling.

Hadith: They get rewards of praying all night

'Uthman b. 'Affan (narrated the mosque after evening prayer and sat alone. I also sat alone with him, so he said: 0, son of my brother, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: He who observed the 'Isha' prayer in congregation, it was as if he prayed up to midnight, and he who prayed the morning prayer in congregation, it was as if he prayed the whole night.

Hadith: They reap rewards of Hajj

    ~~ ~~

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If anyone goes out from his house after performing ablution for saying the prescribed prayer in congregation (in the mosque), his reward will be like that of one who goes for hajj pilgrimage after wearing ihram (robe worn by the hajj pilgrims). And he who goes out to say the mid-morning (duha) prayer, and takes the trouble for this purpose, will take the reward like that of a person who performs umrah. And a prayer followed by a prayer with no worldly talk during the gap between them will be recorded in Illiyyun.

Hadith: They are elevated by degrees, and Angels continue to make dua for them

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The reward for prayer performed by a person in congregation is more than twenty times greater than that of the prayer performed in one’s house or the marketplace. When one performs wuḍūʾ perfectly and then proceeds to the mosque with the sole intention of performing prayer, then for every step he takes towards the mosque, he is upgraded one degree in reward and one of his sins is eliminated until he enters the mosque.
And when he enters the mosque, he is considered as performing prayer as long as it is the prayer which stops him ˹from leaving the mosque˺; and the angels keep on supplicating Allah for him as long as he remains in his place of prayer.
They say: ‘O Allah! Have mercy on him; O Allah! forgive his sins; O Allah! accept his repentance.' ˹This continues, so long as he does cause harm ˹upon anyone˺ in it, or pass wind in it ˹breaking his wuḍūʾ˺ (in a different wording: or speak ˹to anyone˺).”

Hadith: They seek protection from Hellfire

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: He who observes prayer before the rising of the sun and its setting, i.e. the dawn prayer and the afternoon prayer, would not enter the (Hell) fire.

Hadith: They are guaranteed Jannah

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: There are five prayers which Allah has prescribed on His servants. If anyone offers them, not losing any of them, and not treating them lightly, Allah guarantees that He will admit him to Paradise. If anyone does not offer them, Allah does not take any responsibility for such a person. He may either punish him or admit him to Paradise.

They will be the companion of Jannah

11:23 Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds and humbled themselves to their Lord - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide eternally therein.

They will be honored

70:34 And those who ˹carefully˺ maintain their prayer: 35 They will be in gardens, honored.

They will be granted what pleases the eyes

32:16 They arise from ˹their˺ beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend. 17 And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.

They will get an immense reward

4:162 But those firm in knowledge among them and the believers believe in what has been revealed to you, ˹O Muhammad˺, and what was revealed before you. And the establishers of prayer ˹especially˺ and the givers of zakah and the believers in Allah and the Last Day - those We will give a great reward.

They will inherit Paradise

23:10 Those are the inheritors 11 Who will inherit al-Firdaus. They will abide therein eternally. 12 And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.

Hadith: Paradise: Levels of Jannah

"In Paradise, there are a hundred levels, what is between every two levels is like what is between the heavens and the earth. Al-Firdaus is ts highest level, and from it the four rivers of Paradise are made to flow forth. So when you ask Allah, ask Him for Al-Firdaus." Another chain reports a similar narration.

Some rewards of the worshipers

52:18 Enjoying what their Lord has given them, and their Lord protected them from the punishment of Hellfire. 19 ˹They will be told˺, "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do." 20 They will be reclining on thrones lined up, and We will marry them to fair women with large, ˹beautiful˺ eyes. 21 And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith - We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person, for what he earned, is retained. 22 And We will provide them with fruit and meat from whatever they desire. 23 They will exchange with one another a cup ˹of wine˺ wherein ˹results˺ no ill speech or commission of sin. 24 There will circulate among them ˹servant˺ boys ˹especially˺ for them, as if they were pearls well-protected. 25 And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other. 26 They will say, "Indeed, we were previously among our people fearful ˹of displeasing Allah˺. 27 So Allah conferred favor upon us and protected us from the punishment of the Scorching Fire. 28 Indeed, we used to supplicate Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful."

Hadith: Accompany the Prophet in Jannah

I was with Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night. and I brought him water and what he required. He said to me: Ask (anything you like). I said: I ask your company in Paradise. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Or anything else besides it. I said: That is all (what I require). He said: Then help me to achieve this for you by devoting yourself often to prostration.

Salah is indeed Nur

Hadith: Prayer will be a source of light on the Day of Judgement Good Chain

from to the Prophet ﷺ that he mentioned the Salah (prayer) one day and said, "Whoever preserves it, it will be a source of light, proof, and salvation for him on the Day of Judgment. And whoever does not preserve it, he will not have any light, proof, or salvation. He will be with Qarun, Pharaoh, Haman, and Ubay b. Khalaf on the Day of Judgment."

Hadith: Wudu is nur

"On the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be called "Al-Ghurr-ul- Muhajjalun" from the trace of ablution and whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so (i.e. by performing ablution regularly).' "

Hadith: Its perfection of their Nur on Judgement Day

The Prophet ﷺ said: Give good tidings to those who walk to the mosques in darkness for having a perfect light on the Day of Judgment.

Nur on Judgement Day

57:12 On the Day you see the believing men and believing women, their light proceeding before them and on their right, ˹it will be said˺, "Your good tidings today are ˹of˺ gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein you will abide eternally." That is what is the great attainment.

They will be recognized by the Nur

48:29 Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating ˹in prayer˺, seeking bounty from Allah and ˹His˺ pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers - so that Allah may enrage by them the disbelievers. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.

Their dua for perfection of their Nur on Judgement Day

66:8 O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow ˹on˺ the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, "Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent."

The Sahabah in Salah

[[Mawaiz]] by [[Ibn al-Jawzi]]

For the sake of Allah, the best of the people were

Who were so occupied with gathering provisions (for the Hereafter) that they were distracted from their families and children.

And their remembrance of their ultimate fate turned them away from seeking wealth in this world.

The world called out to them, but they did not respond, as they were busy pursuing their true purpose.

They laid their sorrows beneath their heads instead of pillows.

They took the night as a path for their striving and diligence.

They guarded their limbs from the Fire by avoiding misguidance and corruption.

O seeker of desires, pass by their gathering and call upon them:

"Revive my heart!" But they have all perished at the cry of separation.

They deprived their eyes of the comfort of sleep.

And wrapped their ribs around their sighs.

They had long arms (in generosity) and noble noses (in dignity).

Their roots were pure, and their branches were pure.

Their hearts turned toward upholding the right of The Truth (Allah ﷻ).

And thus, they became oblivious to the whispers of creation.

Their bodies moved among the people of the world.

But their hearts grazed in the gardens of the divine kingdom.

Fear visited them, and they became bewildered.

Thought engaged them, and they returned fearful.

The night enveloped them, and they remained sleepless.

When the caller of righteousness called, "Come to success!" they rose for night prayer.

When the breeze of dawn blew upon them, they awakened in seeking forgiveness.

They cut through the bonds of struggle until they reached their destination.

And when they returned at the time of dawn with their reward,

Separation (from the world) cried out: "Woe to those who sleep (and missed out)!"
